Why Are My Lights Flickering? Causes and When It Is Serious

By Kelley Electrical Contracting, LLC. Published October 16, 2026. Educational information, not a substitute for an on-site inspection.

Short answer: Flickering in one fixture is usually a loose or incompatible bulb or dimmer. Flickering in several rooms, with buzzing, burning smells or dimming when appliances start, points to loose connections or an electrical problem that needs a licensed electrician.

One light flickers

Tighten the bulb and try a new one. LED bulbs on an older dimmer switch often flicker or buzz because the dimmer is not designed for LEDs. Replacing the dimmer with one rated for LED loads usually solves it. If a fixture still flickers with a new bulb, the socket or fixture wiring may be loose.

Several lights flicker

When lights across a room, a floor or the whole house flicker, the cause is more likely to be a loose connection in a switch, junction box or panel, or a problem at the meter or service connection. Loose connections create heat and are a fire risk, so this should be inspected.

Lights flicker or dim when something starts

Large appliances such as air conditioners, dryers and pumps draw a surge when they start, which can briefly dim lights, especially if the circuit or service is near its limit. See our article on lights dimming when the AC turns on.

Is it the utility?

If your neighbors see flickering too, or it happens during storms or high demand, the cause may be on the utility side. Report it to your utility, which for most of Fresno and Madera is PG&E.

Frequently asked questions

Can flickering lights cause a fire?

Flickering itself does not, but the loose connections that can cause it generate heat and can. Treat persistent flickering, especially with buzzing or burning smells, as urgent.

Why do LED bulbs flicker?

Usually an incompatible dimmer, a loose bulb or a poor-quality bulb or driver. Try a different LED-rated dimmer or bulb.

Should I turn off the power if lights flicker?

If you smell burning or hear crackling, yes: shut off the circuit or main breaker and call an electrician. Otherwise note which lights and when, and schedule an inspection.
