Outlet Not Working? 7 Things to Check Before You Call an Electrician

By Kelley Electrical Contracting, LLC. Published October 16, 2026. Educational information, not a substitute for an on-site inspection.

Short answer: Check for a tripped GFCI outlet elsewhere in the house, check the breaker panel, test with a lamp you know works, and look for a loose or worn receptacle. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Start with the simple causes

Plug in a lamp or phone charger that you know works so you are sure the outlet is the problem. Then press the TEST and RESET buttons on any GFCI outlets in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry area and outdoors. One GFCI can protect several regular outlets downstream, and a tripped one is the most common reason a normal-looking outlet goes dead.

Check the breaker panel

Look for a breaker that is in the middle or OFF position. Push it fully to OFF and then back to ON. If it trips again right away, stop. A breaker that keeps tripping means there is a short, overload or ground fault that needs to be found, not just reset.

Other common causes

A worn receptacle can lose its grip on the wiring, especially in older homes. Wires pushed into the back of an outlet (called backstab connections) can loosen over time. One loose connection upstream can also take down several outlets at once. These repairs are quick for an electrician but involve live wiring, so they are not a good place to experiment.

Signs to stop and call a pro

Burning smell, discolored or warm outlet plates, buzzing or crackling, sparks, or an outlet that feels hot. Shut off the circuit at the panel and call a licensed electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two outlets stop working at the same time?

They are usually on the same circuit or both downstream of the same GFCI. Reset the GFCI and check the breaker first. If neither fixes it, a loose connection is likely.

Can I replace an outlet myself?

Some homeowners do, but you must shut off and verify power is off first and know what you are looking at. Old, aluminum or ungrounded wiring is a reason to call an electrician.

Is a dead outlet an emergency?

Not by itself. Heat, burning smells, sparks or a breaker that will not stay on are warning signs that should be treated urgently.
