Burning Smell From an Outlet or Electrical Panel: What to Do Right Now

By Kelley Electrical Contracting, LLC. Published October 16, 2026. Educational information, not a substitute for an on-site inspection.

Short answer: If you smell burning from an outlet, switch or panel: stop using it, switch off power at the breaker if you can do so safely, unplug devices, and call a licensed electrician. If you see smoke or flames, leave the building and call 911.

Act first

If there is smoke, flames or sparks, get everyone out and call 911. Do not use water on an electrical fire. A Class C or ABC-rated extinguisher is the right type if you have one and the fire is small and you have a clear exit.

If there is only a smell

Turn off the affected circuit at the panel, or the main breaker if you cannot tell which. Unplug devices from the outlet. Do not keep using the outlet to see if the smell goes away. A hot-plastic or fishy smell is a classic sign of overheated wiring, a loose connection or a failing device.

If the panel itself smells hot or is buzzing

Do not open the panel cover. If it is safe to reach, switch off the main breaker; if not, stay away and call your utility or 911. A licensed electrician should inspect the panel before it is used again.

Common causes

Overloaded circuits, loose connections, worn receptacles, damaged cords, and failing breakers are the usual culprits. Fixing the cause matters, because simply resetting power can restart the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is a burning smell from an outlet an emergency?

Treat it as urgent. Shut off power to that circuit and call a licensed electrician right away. Call 911 for smoke or fire.

What does an electrical burning smell smell like?

Often like burning plastic, hot metal or a fishy or acrid odor.

Can I just replace the outlet?

Only after the cause is found. A hot outlet is often a symptom of loose wiring behind it that needs a professional repair.
